How to Exchange Books on Audible? An Illustrated Guide

One of the best things about being an Audible member is their amazing return policy. For any reason, if you are not happy with the audiobook that you purchased, you can simply return it and get a refund.
In this post, you will get an illustrated guide to exchange or return your audible books on mobile and desktop devices. But before that, don’t forget to read Audible’s return policy.
It is important that you do not misuse their policy. In some cases, Audible might even suspend your account if it finds that you are abusing their return policy.
Please Note: As of now, ‘Return’ option is not available in the Audible App. You will have to log in to your account in Audible’s Official Website from a desktop or mobile browser to make a return.
Audible’s Return Policy
Audible offers a very easy, quick and convenient exchange or return service. Their policy is designed that way so that a user feel comfortable trying a random audiobook or different narrator without the fear of having to stick to the purchased book even if it turned out to be unsatisfactory.
Though Audible’s return policy is incredibly liberal, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:
- You must return the audiobook within 365 days of purchasing it.
- You must be an Audible Member to return audiobooks.
- You will be refunded in the same way you bought it, that is, if you paid with a credit, you get back a credit. If you paid using a card, you get your money back.
- You can return a book even if you’ve already listened to it.
The last point might have brightened up your eyes, right? 😉
But, wait… It’s not that you can use a single credit to listen to 30 audiobooks a month. If Audible notices that you are abusing their return policy, you might not be able to return any audiobook anymore, or even worse, your account might be suspended!
However, before any such actions are taken against you, you will be contacted by the Audible Customer Care and warned if they think you are abusing the policy.
So, how many books can you exchange?
Well… There is no fixed number on how many returns you can make. But if you are regularly buying, listening and then returning the books, Audible will eventually notice.
Just to give you an idea, Last month I returned 2 audiobooks. One was the Spanish version of ‘Steve Jobs’, which I bought by mistake. I exchanged it with the English version of the same book.
The other one was ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck’, which I returned after listening just the first chapter. I was not enjoying the narration. Later I read the paperback version of the book instead.
And even after making two returns, I was still getting the option to make another return. So I guess, returning 2-3 books should not be a problem unless you are doing it on a regular basis…
Please Note: If you have already made too many returns, you might not find the ‘Return’ option on your Account even from a desktop or mobile browsers. In that case, you will have to contact the Audible Customer Care to make any return.
How to exchange Audible books on Desktop?
Here’s the step-by-step process to exchange audible books on desktop:
1. Go to Audible’s website and log in to your account. After you log in, you will land into your Home Page.

2. Click or hover over your name at the top right of the page, and then click on ‘Account Details‘ from the drop-down menu.

3. On your account page, click on ‘Purchase History‘ option.

4. You will see a list of all the audiobooks that you have purchased.

5. Now, look for the title that you want to return. Click on the ‘Return’ option on the right side of the title.
(Audible Originals are not eligible for returns.)

6. You will get a Popup asking you to choose a reason why you want to return the title.

7. Choose your reason and click on Return button. That’s it, your book is returned.
Once you have returned the book, you will get back your credit immediately and you can then use it to buy another audiobook. If you bought the book some other way, it may take up to 10 working days for the refund to go through.
How to exchange Audible books on Mobile?
Though the steps for exchanging Audible books on mobile is almost the same as that on a desktop, there is one problem. In most of the cases, you won’t see the ‘Return’ option when you visit the mobile site of the website.
You can check it yourself. Log in to your Audible account using your mobile browser.
Here’s the home page as seen from chrome on android.

Click on the Menu button on the upper left corner. From the Menu choose ‘My Account’, and then click on ‘Purchase History’.
Unlike, desktop site, you will not see the ‘Return’ option for your titles. (See image below.)

You might think that clicking on that arrow (>) sign may take you to the return option page, but no, it only shows the purchase details of that particular audiobook.
So, what to do now?
Well, there’s nothing to worry, you just have to take one extra step after you log in to your account using a mobile browser. Just go to the bottom of the page, and find the option for ’Full Site’ and click on it.

Once you click it, you will be redirected to the desktop version of the site.

You can now see the menu bar on top, same as that of the desktop site.
Once you are on the desktop site, remaining all steps for exchanging the book on audible are the same as that of the desktop version explained above.

Thank you for sharing! I couldn’t figure it out where can I find it on my mobile device.
You say ” If you have already made too many returns, you might not find the ‘Return’ option on your Account even from a desktop or mobile browsers. In that case, you will have to contact the Audible Customer Care to make any return. ”
What do you consider “too many returns”? You fail to mention that fact!!
Hi Tony!
Probably, no one can tell you the exact number of returns that you can make. As soon as Audible finds out that you are trying to abuse their return policy, they might stop showing the ‘Return’ option. I don’t know the exact number because I never tried to abuse their policy. And I would also suggest you to refrain from abusing it.
However, if you are really interested in knowing it, you may contact Audible customer care from the link below:
